No. 1

On his first birthday, Jack slept in and woke up bright-eyed and bushy-haired, ready to party.

He was happy to play with his cousins, who always have fun passing him around and working on their choreography.

They helped him open his presents and blow out his candle (yes, there was one, which inexplicably someone lit).

He got a helping hand learning to play with his new toys, which were such a hit that we moved our silicon spatulas and bakeware back into the kitchen after a three-month run as his favorite things.

At the end of the day, we wound down with our respective bedtime stories (Desperate Housewives for me; Sandra Boynton and John Prater for him), and Jack tried to decide which new toy he likes best.

Only after he put himself to sleep in the crib did I become, finally and completely, overwhelmed by the realization that’s it’s been a year – a whole YEAR – since he showed up, all tiny and new, nearsighted and immobile. I remember crying last spring over his fleeting infancy, and worrying that every milestone would make me sad with its passing. My mother assured me I’d be wrong – that every new phase would be cuter and more fun that the last – and with the exception of teething, as usual her forecast was accurate.

It’s been a blur of cliché-affirming joy and surprise.

This was such a touching account of Jack’s big day! It has been so fun to watch you and Don take on this great adventure and even more exciting to watch Jack grow! I hope the three of you had a wonderful time celebrating.

Oh, happy happy day to Jack!!!

Of course, my very enthusiastic plans of a month ago to send him something special were foiled by the onset of Comprehensive Exams (very much like a thesis, but completed over the course of two weeks!) — which are due Wednesday. You may have noticed that I haven’t posted anything on our blog in quite sometime–we’re still planning to post about Brian’s birthday and a trip to New York, which happened the first two weekends of March!

All this is just to say, that I have been thinking of you all, and especially little Jack on his especially special day. 🙂

David wants to know where his toy chainsaw is (he saw the picture of Jack playing with the box at Aidan’s party)…

    Happy Birthday Jack!
I am right there with you in disbelief at how fast a year can go.
I love the photo of him on the couch, he looks like he had a long, but wonderful day.

And is that choreography to “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” or “Macarena”?
