Reading labels

April 29, 2009

The next time you find yourself  lingering with indecision over wine selection, why not  look for the label that chooses for you?

Yes, that’s right – Barefoot Pinot Grigio was the official wine of Pro Beach Volleyball 2008!

SOLD.

The $6 price tag was a draw, but the athletic endorsement really sealed the deal.

If you aren’t into volleyball, the LPGA tour and the Buffalo Sabres both have official wines, too (respectively, Mirassou and Sabres-branded white and red from Bully Hill).

If you have a favorite to recommend as The Official Wine of Parenting, please let me know. Price and volume should be weighed carefully, but the wine doesn’t HAVE to come in a box.

That said, so far my vote is for Bota Box, which offers the equivalent of four bottles for the price of two, comes in recycleable packaging and gives to the Arbor Day Foundation. (I’m proud to allow for upward mobility in my wine endorsements. My Official Wine of Graduate School was Peter Vella’s Delicious Red.)

And, for the record, when hosting guests, celebrating, or enjoying dinner out, we do drink outside the box.

Perhaps you shouldn’t tell D, but our local liquor store has begun selling Don Simone.

Your posts are too clever for words, “we do drink outside the box.” You kill me with your writing talent!

Don Simón in the US?? I can’t believe it. How much does it cost? I think a liter here is less than 1€.

Actually, it would be interesting to compare it to cheap US wine. Here it’s not even drinkable (at least by itself) since you can get good bottles for 2-3€ — when I’m trying to impress I might spend up to 5€.

In general, Don Simón is to mix: with Coke to make Calimoxo, or with Fanta Limón or Gaseosa (sort of like Sprite, but with less flavor) to make Tinto de Verano.

Still, I don’t recommend it!! Don does realize that “Don” is not a name, but a title?

Don Simone Sangria… $6.99 per 1.5L plastic, screw-top soda bottle.
    Hold me back!

Tinto de Verano sounds just like what we used to do with Pride of Cucamonga ($3.00 / Gallon) and 7-Up.

The official wine of motherhood? It’s called: Mommy’s Time out, and sports a picture of an empty chair, facing the corner, with a wine bottle and glass right next to the chair. I don’t know if the wine is any good, but I’m considering buying a case as gifts for my fellow sleepless, flustered mommy friends. 🙂
