Taking the long way

This afternoon begins several days and 1,400 miles  in and out of the car. Though the trip from Arkansas to the Virginia seashore isn’t as far as, say, driving across Siberia, this will be the longest car ride we’ve taken with Jack, who hasn’t yet been south or west of Texas or north of Chicago.

It’ll also be a record trip for our 10-year-old Honda, which got the mechanical thumbs up yesterday. D had to remind me to take it in for a once-over, which is not something I’m naturally inclined to do. A few years ago, when my paternal grandmother died, my dad drove to New Jersey from here to meet us all for the memorial service. He left equipped with a) an extra motor in the bed of his pickup, in case of problems along the way, and b) my younger brother, to help put it in. They made the trip there and back with no hiccups in a vehicle then twice as old as mine is now. It’s examples like this one that contribute to my tendency to check the oil, tread and air pressure and figure that if the car sounds good, the spark plugs and belts and other auto-insides are good enough. There’s a critical distinction, though, in that my dad actually knows how to fix things that go wrong.

Once upon a time, when we’d all pile into the truck to go somewhere, he would kick things off with  “And we’re off! Waaayyy off.” Which was less a tribute to the trip than it was to our wacky family.

(And we’re still crazy, after all these years.)

Enjoy the journey (if that’s even possible on a 1400 mile road trip with a toddler)!
Hopefully the VA destination will make it all worthwhile.

Have a good trip, I hope the weather clears here on the East Coast for your stay. Your day sounds like a fun guy.

Ha! My dad would ALWAYS say “Off we go, like a herd of turtles…” (to the tune of the Air Force song).

Have a great trip! You and the Honda.
