Terrible Twos?

June 7, 2010

Terrible Two, your reputation precedes you (and misleads me).

My son has been two for just two months, and this might come back to bite me in the you-kn0w-what (Look at me, watching my tongue post-F-bomb incident!), but toddlerhood? I am enchanted. He can be loud and a little bossy, to be sure – but with sentences! His  curiosity, sense of adventure and wonder are so pronounced and generous that trips to the Post Office, the grocery and Target have become fun quality time. He has a big little person personality and halting little speech, a quirky little memory and creative dance moves. And when I’m less dizzy with fun, I’ll write about it.

Who wouldn’t be enchanted with that face?

The 2’s were never a problem for me. The 3’s, however, are a handful.

I’ve heard this sentiment from others and, as the mom of a two-year-old who routinely gives her a run for her proverbial money, it terrifies me.

      Enjoy your sweet little guy!

I just want you to know that when we got in the car to go home Saturday, Nathaniel asked “Why do you think Jack listens to Leslie so well? I wish Grace would obey us like that.” Consider your parenting skills noted and envied. 🙂

Toddlers make the world incredibly brighter and so much more entertaining!

Isn’t it fun? I just like it more and more… Hayden is like a person now. He can have a conversation with me. I think it’s fabulous!

Although there are periods in which he can be bossy, sensitive, mean, and unpleasant… but he can’t always be good.

I’d forgotten this wonderful age only too quickly. And now we’re entering it again with our 15 month old and I’m delighting in it all over again. Their sense of wonder, curiousity and new personality is so very, very exciting. I’m so glad you are loving it!! Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy. Because before you know it, all will change.

This age (Paige will be two in August, so I’m lumping her in w/ your little guy!!) is so much fun. Honestly. They’re testing and they’re trying, but they’re discovering and learning. And Yes…. threes are hard. Super hard. But still good.
    I love that photo!

Agreed! It was such a treat to spend the evening with Jack. And we love those dance moves!

The twos were terrible for me, as well as the threes. It’s funny you mention your wonderful times at Target with your son, because my daughter would throw a tantrum every time we step foot in one. It became a running joke in our house, everyone claiming the red target brought the anger out. Glad you are having so much fun.

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this, but um, it’s the “WTF Three’s.” Really. Twos are a piece of cake.

Ha! I’m totally stealing that phrase … “the WTF Three’s.” If only it weren’t so very true! =>

I DIED during my son’s terrible twos. I have been resurrected for age three. Which I love.

PS. I had an infant during the back half of E’s twos as well as potty-training so I lack perspective. Maybe.

My 18-month old is getting there and I’m a little worried. More back arching tantrums in sight but I also relish the budding personality, the words, the earnest need and want to learn. It’s wonderful! So happy you’re having a great time with your little guy – it gives me hope 🙂

Something that we, as parents, must remember is the twos and threes are full of volatility because the child is discovering their world in a more mature fashion. They are figuring out what they can and cannot do in their search for independence. Researchers often compare them to teenagers; when the rules are not clear or consistent, they will throw tantrums, when their routine is switched, they will have melt downs. It really is a turbulent time for both parents and kids! Yet, having your positive attitude will make is so much better! (Not necessarily easier!)

Of course I may change my mind when my daughter enters her twos. ; )
